Vibe coding music with strudel.cc

06.20.2025

Who needs a front-end anyway? Brooklyn artist DJ Dave is redefining live performance with code. Think Boiler Room for the browser era.

Armed with a mic, a MIDI controller, and a browser window as a command center, DJ Dave delivers a performance technique that uses live coding to generate beats, melodies, and moods directly in the browser. And at the heart of this magic is Strudel.cc: a real-time, browser-based music coding environment that lets artists write music with code, as fluidly as painting on canvas. You can learn to use Strudel here. Watching DJ Dave type out her sound is impressive. The syntax of her performance flows in real time, and her music is f*cking good. A new genre? Maybe. A new format for live performance? Definitely. She first came on our radar via this tweet by banteg.

It’s also one of the most Gen-O things imaginable: internet-native, open-source, and vibe-first. DJ Dave is part of a new wave of artists for whom the boundary between creator and coder is beautifully blurred. With platforms like Strudel.cc lowering the barrier to entry, we’re seeing a cultural shift — away from polished perfection and toward something more intimate, improvisational, and honest.

Go down the rabbit hole with us. DJ Dave we salute your vibes.
